Intestinal parasites

Intestinal parasites include all of the organism including worms and single celled organism which lives in the intestine. Parasite is a term used to refer an organism which lives on another organism which is called as host. Parasite will use the host’s body for nourishment and shelter. They use host body as a carrier for the next hosts where it will thrive and multiply in numbers. Parasite provides zero benefits to the host.

Types of intestinal parasites

There are two types of intestinal parasites, helminths which are intestinal parasitic worms and Protozoa which are one celled organisms.

Helminths(Intestinal parasitic worms)

Helminths include a variety of round worms  that are round and flat worms, naturally as flat as the name shows. Helminths are equipped to survive and thrive in the body. It absorbs nutrients and find great comfort and shelter in the body. Helminths cannot reproduce inside the body. For reproduction it lay eggs on the body. When the eggs exits out of the body as feces , it might come in contact with the new host’s  body and the egg has the capability to enter the body.

Intestinal worms include:

Pinworms (enterobiasis):  Pinworms are the thread like worms which enters the body when our hand or body parts comes in contact with the pinworm eggs contaminated area then it get transferred from hands to mouth if the hands are not kept in perfect hygiene. At night time female pin worms lay egg around the anus which results in enormous amount of itching. Eggs will spread through out by touching the surfaces after scratching or touching anus.

Ascaris (ascariasis): it’s a small microscopic worms which looks like an earth worm. It enters the body when in contacts with soil which is contaminated by this worm. The contamination is due to the poop. It happens most commonly in the places were toilet facilities are limited.

Whipworms (trichuriasis): Whipworms are characterized by their shape which is like a whip like structure. It is transferred from soil contamination.

Hookworms (ancylostomiasis): hookworms have a very special mouth structure which is referred as hooks which it uses to attach itself to the intestine lining to extract nourishment. They feed on host’s blood which will cause the person anemia and the depletion of essential nutrients from the host’s body. They have  the ability to enter through the skin when comes in contact.

Tapeworms: These are the worms whose body resembles a ribbon. It most live among the stomach of cow, fish and pigs. They spread among human beings when the animals like cow and pig or fish were eaten undercooked and can also get transferred to the body when it comes in contact with the eggs and passed on to mouth.

Protozoa

These are the single cell organism which lives mostly on contaminated water or vegetables or fruit. Similar to helminths, it can also enter to the body by ingesting trace amount of poop contains eggs. Different to most of the helminths the protozoans can reproduce inside the human host.

Common types of protozoa include:

• Giardia (giardiasis).
• Entamoeba histolytica (amebiasis).
• Cyclospora (cyclosporiasis).
• Cryptosporidium (cryptosporidiosis).
• Blastocystis species (Blastocystosis).
• Cystoisospora belli (cystoisosporiasis).

Symptoms of intestinal parasites

These are the most common symptoms for the presence of parasites inside the stomach

• Gas or bloating
• Dysentery (loose stools containing blood and mucus)

Causes for intestinal parasitic infection?

There are several cause for parasitic infection which include

Living in or visiting Endemic areas: Living or visiting in tropical or subtropical climatic places can increase the exposure to the parasitic eggs which resulting in its ingestion in to our body

Drinking contaminated water: Some parasitic eggs can survive in the contaminated water even some protozoans. While consuming this water with out adequate heating can result in entering parasites inside the body

Touching the mouth with the finger: Touching the mouth with the finger with out proper hygiene can result in ingestion of parasites. Since our hands are the organs we used to touch the surfaces more often it results in attaching parasitic eggs to the finger.

Walking on the contaminated soil barefoot: Some parasites can enter the body through the skin when someone walks through the soil which is contaminated.

Risk factors

It is more likely to get intestinal parasitic infection with the following situation

Dosage
