Hepatitis is characterized as a condition that arises due to inflammation of the liver, which is a sign of distress.
The liver’s primary function is to filter toxins from the body. When there is an accumulation of heavy toxins,
the liver cannot handle them, leading to inflammation.
Hepatitis can also result from viral infections, which make the liver vulnerable and unable to function properly.

There are two main types of hepatitis: acute hepatitis, which is a short-lived inflammation of the liver that occurs as an immediate response to an emergency,
and chronic hepatitis, which is a long-term inflammation of the liver.
Types of Hepatitis
Hepatitis is classified based on how it is induced inside the body. Common causes include viral infections, toxins, alcohol, fatty liver, autoimmune conditions, and others.
Viral Hepatitis
Viral hepatitis is caused by infections in liver cells. The immune system responds by creating inflammation.
Hepatitis A (HAV)

  • Transmission: Fecal-oral route, often via contaminated food or water.
  • Tests: IgM antibodies for recent infection; IgG for past infection/immunity.

Hepatitis B (HBV)

  • Transmission: Body fluids (blood, sexual fluids).
  • Tests: HBsAg (current infection), Anti-HBs (recovery/vaccination), Anti-HBc (acute/chronic).

Hepatitis C (HCV)

  • Transmission: Blood-to-blood contact (e.g., needles).
  • Tests: Anti-HCV antibodies and HCV RNA for active infection.

Hepatitis D (HDV)

  • Transmission: Requires prior HBV infection; spreads through body fluids.
  • Tests: Anti-HDV antibodies and HDV RNA.

Hepatitis E (HEV)

  • Transmission: Fecal-oral route (contaminated water).
  • Tests: Anti-HEV IgM (recent), IgG (past).

Other Viral Causes

  • EBV: Causes mono; tested via viral capsid antigen.
  • CMV: Detected with PCR and antibody tests, especially in immunocompromised.
Toxic Hepatitis

Caused by exposure to harmful chemicals or drugs. The liver becomes overwhelmed, leading to inflammation and damage.

  • Industrial chemicals
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs like NSAIDs
  • Prescription drugs (statins, antibiotics)
  • Non-prescribed drugs (ecstasy, cocaine)
  • Natural toxins (solanine, aflatoxins, oxalic acid)

Alcohol-Induced Hepatitis
Can be acute (after binge drinking) or chronic. Sensitivity to alcohol varies by person.

Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis

  • High fat in blood
  • Overweight/obesity
  • Diabetes
  • High BP and heart disease

Autoimmune Hepatitis
Occurs when the immune system attacks the liver. Can be primary or part of other autoimmune diseases affecting bile ducts.

Other Causes

  • Cholestasis (bile backup)
  • Genetic/metabolic disorders (Wilson disease, GSD, hemochromatosis)
  • Ischemia (loss of blood flow to liver)

Risk Factors

  • IV drug use
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Medication overuse
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Poor sanitation
  • Chemical exposure at work

Complications

  • Cirrhosis: Scarring that limits liver function.
  • Portal Hypertension: Blood pressure buildup from blocked veins.
  • Liver Cancer: Common in chronic hepatitis B/C.
  • Liver Failure: Acute or chronic; can be life-threatening.

Symptoms of Hepatitis

  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice (yellow eyes/skin)
  • Dark urine
  • Clay-colored stools
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal pain
  • Joint pain
  • Fever
